The Answers

1. Telluride, Colorado

Butch Cassidy and three accomplices robbed the San Miguel Valley Bank on 24 June 1889, making off with $21,000. Today Telluride spans approximately 2,000 acres with 125 trails — considerably more law and order than in 1889.

2. Aspen, Colorado

John Denver immortalised Aspen in his lyric: "It's a long way home to Starwood in Aspen / A sweet Rocky Mountain paradise." Denver was one of the first stars to make a winter home there, and the town's association with music and culture has never left.

3. Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid hosted the III Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and again in 1980 — one of only a handful of venues to host twice. Other US Winter Olympic hosts include Squaw Valley (1960) and Salt Lake City (2002).

4. Stowe, Vermont

The Trapp Family Lodge opened in 1950 with 27 rooms and has expanded significantly over the decades. Stowe's skiable area covers 485 acres with 116 trails across Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak.

5. Val d'Isère, France

The 'OK' piste was named after Jean-Claude Killy (three golds, Grenoble 1968) and Henri Oreiller (two golds, St Moritz 1948). See our guide to best ski resorts for non-skiers for more on this iconic resort.

6. Downhill Racing

Downhill is the fastest alpine discipline. Top racers regularly exceed 140 km/h on courses like the Hahnenkamm Streif in Kitzbühel and the Lauberhorn in Wengen.

7. La Plagne and Les Arcs

The Vanoise Express — a spectacular double-decker gondola — first linked La Plagne and Les Arcs in December 2003, crossing the Ponturin valley at 380 m. Together they form the Paradiski ski area.

8. Orelle

Orelle sits in the Val Thorens valley extension, giving access to the Three Valleys from a quieter entry point. Val Thorens is the highest resort in western Europe, which is why the fourth connection is unofficial but beloved.

9. Glenshee

Glenshee leads with 36 runs, followed by Cairngorm (36 runs on 6 chairlifts), The Lecht (20) and Glencoe (17). Scotland's ski areas reward patience — when conditions align, they're unforgettable.

10. The Milky Way (Via Lattea)

The Via Lattea links Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx and Sansicario in Italy with Montgenèvre in France — over 400 km of pistes. Sestriere hosted alpine skiing at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
