1. Davies Alpine House, Kew Gardens, London
You don't need to travel far for your first taste of alpine flora. Kew Gardens' remarkable Davies Alpine House recreates the cool, dry and windy conditions of high-altitude environments, allowing rare alpine plants to flourish in London. An ideal introduction to the species you'll encounter in the mountains — and open year-round.

2. Val Trupchun, Swiss National Park, Switzerland
Tucked into the Swiss National Park near Zernez, Val Trupchun is one of the most rewarding wildflower valleys in the Alps. Orchids, lilies, gentians and alpine roses bloom in a strictly protected area with no motor traffic. Red deer, chamois and ibex are frequently spotted at dusk. The circular trail from S-charl takes approximately 4–5 hours.
The nearby Engadin valley — home to St Moritz — is equally beautiful in summer.

3. Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), Italy
Europe's largest alpine meadow, rising to 2,350 m above South Tyrol, turns into a sea of wildflowers in June and July. Gentians, orchids, buttercups and edelweiss compete against the backdrop of the Dolomites. Traditional mountain huts — some dating to the 16th century — provide excellent lunches of speck and local cheese. Easily reached by cable car from Ortisei or Castelrotto.

4. Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, France
Directly across from Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve offers flower-rich trails with some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. The Lac Blanc trail (3–4 hours) reaches a glacial lake with front-row views of the Mont Blanc massif and edelweiss growing beside the path. The reserve is also rich in ibex and chamois. Chamonix makes an excellent base — see our
best ski resorts for non-skiers for Chamonix's full appeal.

5. Alpe Devero Nature Reserve, Italy
Less visited than its Italian neighbours, Alpe Devero in Piedmont is famous for its fields of edelweiss and the beautiful Lake Devero, a glacial lake ringed by mountains. Easy walking trails follow the lakeshore and climb into higher meadows. The reserve has a strict no-cars policy in summer, reached by shuttle bus from Baceno.

6. Engadine Valley, Switzerland
Switzerland's Engadine valley — running from Maloja to Martina — is celebrated for extraordinary wildflower meadows in June and July, when fields turn blue, yellow and white. The valley's picturesque villages of Guarda, Ardez and Sent are UNESCO-protected with elaborate painted facades. St Moritz sits at its heart.

7. Julian Alps, Slovenia
One of Europe's best-kept secrets for mountain walking. Centred on Triglav National Park and Bovec, the region offers extraordinary scenery — glacial lakes, limestone peaks, flower-filled valleys — with far fewer visitors than the Swiss or French Alps. Rare species include the Carniolan primrose and Julian poppy, found nowhere else on earth.

8. Vanoise National Park, France
France's first national park protects 530 km² of the Graian Alps between Val d'Isère and Modane. Its meadows are rich in gentians, edelweiss and alpine asters. The park holds one of the best ibex populations in the Alps — over 2,000 animals. The Grande Traversée des Alpes passes through; shorter day walks start from Les Arcs and Val d'Isère.

9. Rila Mountains, Bulgaria
For something entirely different, the Rila Mountains offer spectacular alpine scenery and extraordinary wildflower meadows at a fraction of Western Alps prices. The Seven Rila Lakes route — a circuit of seven glacial lakes between 2,100–2,500 m — is one of the most popular walks in the Balkans. The UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery at the foot of the mountains is unmissable.

10. Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria
Austria's largest national park encompasses the Grossglockner massif (see our Alpine driving routes guide) and protects extraordinary alpine habitats. The Krimml Waterfalls — Austria's highest at 380 m — make a spectacular centrepiece for a day's hiking. One of the highest concentrations of golden eagles in Central Europe.
Best Time to Visit for Alpine Flowers
• June–July: Peak flowering at lower altitudes (1,500–2,000 m). Lush meadows, edelweiss in bloom.
• July–August: High-altitude flowers at their best above 2,000 m. Gentians, alpine asters, mountain avens.
• Late August: Many meadows fade but high passes remain beautiful; fewer crowds.
• Late September: Autumn colour in valleys; most mountain huts closing for the season.
